The Power of a PeopleSoft User Group
|
I recently attended the South East Regional and Florida User Group Meeting in Atlanta. I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the attendance level. There were approximately 100 attendees at this RUG event. For whatever reason, this is a much lower number of attendees than usual.
I believe that one of the man reasons is because PeopleSoft has become a mature application. Nonetheless, attending the RUG was a tremendous benefit for those who did attend. There is nothing more powerful than socially networking with other like minded individuals and helping eachother with your daily issues and projects. In fact, we will soon be over hauling the PSoftPros website to make this an online social networking spot for PeopleSoft professionals. Stay tuned for that one...
In the mean time, I wanted to discuss one of the highlights of the RUG. Many people have heard the word "Fusion" over and over with much speculation and sometimes even fear. However, it was very comforting to actually see some presentations of what Oracle has done and will be doing with integrating the Fusion middleware into our PeopleSoft applications.
Tools 8.49 will be released in 2007 and will contain quite a bit of this new technology. Some of the features in 8.49 will include Java 5 on all PIA components along with some system wide performance improvements. For example, tools 8.49 will allow for all layers of the application components to be run on the 64-bit architecture. Prior to 8.49, only the database could be run on the 64 bit architectures, however, the application servers and web servers will all work on 64-bit in 8.49.
Fusion middleware will be comprised of a Service Oriented Architecture running Java, XML, Web Services and the Business Process Execution Layer (BPEL). This along with Oracle's new Web Cache server which provides reverse proxy cache and a compression engine, will prove to be a solid middleware platform.
One of the other major reporting tools for Fusion middleware is the Oracle XML publisher. This will allow PeopleSoft developers to move away from third party development tools like Crystal Reports, and will allow users to perform reporting in MS Word, Excel, Adobe, and many other applications accross heterogenous platforms. In addition the users will be able to deliver these reports in a variety of different methods.
All in all, attending a RUG is a great way to stay up to date on whats new and upcoming, and to network with many other pr
